Welcome to the fourth month of the Esther Block Sew-along! We know we repeat this a lot but it gives us a thrill each time an Esther block appears in our Instagram feeds. You all are making some amazing blocks- give yourself a big pat on the back!
So for December we are going to continue focusing on that big ole' half hexi. This month's prompt is: using the edge of a motif along the outer edge of the half-hexi. ...scratching your head again? Let's explain with a picture.
This is a great example by Sara. She used just the edge of a very cool stripe right along the short side of the hexi. Here is the fabric which she cut this little strip from:
This is one of Laura's blocks where she used this technique as well. Part of this technique is using the negative space in a fabric design. By this we mean the background of a fabric design (i.e. the space around a flower for example)
This is the fabric that Laura used to achieve that look:
Here is another example by Laura. She has used just the top of a flower coming in from the outside edge of the large half hexi.. As you can see in all three of these examples the negative space, or the "background" color becomes the focus of the large half hexi.
Here is one more example of this technique. This block was made by Kathy MacAulay @macaulaykathy. We really love how that little edge of bright triangles on the edge of the block borders the block in such a dynamic way.
We hope this inspires you to look at your fabric in a different way and see that the background of a design can become the focus.
Remember, this is a stress free and fun place to share your blocks, no matter whether you try a prompt or just make a block that you are wanting to make. We love to see your creativity and encourage a community that shares and supports one another.
Please share your work with the tags:

A quick side note: the Instagram algorithm sometimes lets us down, even if you tag us. So PLEASE, if you think we may have missed your block (we try to comment and share to our stories all that we see!), don't be shy! Give a PM to one or both of us. We don't want to miss anyone's work!
Interesting prompt!
