Hi Everyone.
Hard to believe the summer solstice is just around the corner. As Laura posted her 9th Esther block of this sew along, it made us realize how quickly a year goes. We are so glad for all of you who have stuck around so far, whether it is joining in or just observing.
This month's prompt was inspired by one of the sew-along participant's May blocks. Jessica Bree Thompson made two very cool blocks in May and she has been kind enough to let us use her idea for June's prompt!
It is to use the same fabric in both the center jewels and the small half-hexi.
This is Jessica's first block with this idea. There are so many things we love about this block. The invention of mirroring the jewel and half-hexi is ingenious. and how she cut the plaid is SO good.....and that star created in the center jewels! Swooning.
..and this is another block Jessica made as well. Similarly, she mirrored the jewel and half-hexi fabric. A more subtle block but still beautiful - we love how the side images line up in the jewels. In her post Jessica mentioned how proud she was of this block- she has been pushing herself to think about how she fussy cuts her fabric, and it certainly shows.
In case you didn’t know, along with participating in our sewalong, Jessica is also running on of her own! It’s a Facebook based sewalong (Sara is particpating) for making large EPP diamonds called the Mixed Tape Sewalong. There is a different prompt every week on Friday, plus a whole catalog of extra blocks with recipe cards so you can make whatever suits you (like a mixed tape!!). There is also an amazing library of self-cut shapes in multiples sizes for either print/cut or cricut in the files section. If you are interested, head on over to Facebook and look for the EPP Collaborative Community. You will have to answer a few questions to join, as the group is private, but we think you will really like it!
We each wanted to try our hand at the block before we presented to you,
so first up is Sara’s rendition using a new Anna Maria Horner print from the HOME collection. When her LQS got this in, she knew she had to have a piece - so many fussy cutting options and lots of repeats!
If you look closely, you can see she did some pattern matching between the center jewel shapes and the small half-hexies. If you want to try pattern matching, Sara added a tutorial in March for her “scotch tape” method of pattern matching - find it by clicking the link below
Laura's block is from her blue and green series and extends the blue-on-blue flowers out to the half-hexies. She gets a nice repeat of the green from the center along the outside edge of the small half-hexie. Its really nice the way the triangles on the hexagons point you to the middle. Sara didn't even realize those outside large half-hexies were tiger faces right off, she was so enamored with the center! All great elements of fine fussy cutting!
We hope this provides some inspiration for your warmer weather sewing! As always, if this prompt doesn't speak to you, just make a block you love and have fun with the process. Please tag us when you post on social media, so we can ooh! and ahhh! over your fabulous creations and share with others for inspiration!
