We have arrived in the dog days of summer here in the Northern Hemisphere and it has been HOT - even in Canada!
As the years progress we both find ourselves reaching for "easier" fussy cutting projects as the summer heats up. It feels like our brain somehow loses its ability to focus as the atmosphere gets warmer. Despite this unconscious wish to take it easy, we thought we would give a gentle stretch, one more time, with July's prompt .
July's prompt is to create a secondary shape within the jewel shapes.
“What are they talking about?“ you may ask. Here are some examples:
This gorgeous block by Karen @kizjar is a fantastic example of creating a secondary shape within the confines of the jewel shapes. The curly cues create a wonderful organic hexagon in the center which draws your eye to the shape she created rather than the jewel shapes.
Here is another example by @kizjar. In this block Karen created another strong hexagon with a star center defined by those graphic striped lines.
This beauty is by Christi @welterworks.
We absolutely LOVE that graphic burst that she created inside her center jewels!
We had highlighted this stunning block from Jessica @jesssicabree last month for using the same fabric in her jewel and half-hexi, but it also answers the prompt for this month as well. The star shape she created out of her jewels is fantastic.
and here is another block from Jessica. We just love the graphic inner star and flower motif she has created inside her jewels- SO good!!
These next two blocks are from Sara. In this one she has created a strong inner hexagon with those moth bodies- love how the antennas function as such a cool design element!
In this block Sara has totally hidden the shape of the jewel by cleverly pattern matching her half-hexi, but is still creating a new dominant shape in the center jewel motif- brilliant!
This is one of Laura's blocks- she too has created strong star shape in the center which is enhanced by the way in which she used the same area of the fabric for the half-hexi which also appears on the edge of the jewel shape. It effectively hides the jewel shape and focuses your eye on the double star and the circle shape instead.
We have given quite a few examples here to get the idea across. It is fun, and we encourage you, if you haven't done it recently, to scroll through the estherblock and estherblocksal hashtags and pick out other blocks that share this quality.
As always, these prompts are a jumping off point for you to think about the block in perhaps a different way, or expand your ideas of how you might cut up your fabric. Remember, this is a stress free and fun place to share your blocks, so no matter whether you try a prompt, or just make a block that you are wanting to make, we love to see your creativity and encourage a community that shares and supports one another.

Can't wait to see what you create!
Love,
