Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2024! We hope your holiday season has been filled with all the things you love!

In the spirit of the New Year, we thought it would be fun to try to turn your block into "something new". The idea is to take any of the shapes inside the block and change them up by cutting them into new shapes. They can be typical EPP shapes or random shapes - your choice!

Not sure what we mean by that? Here are some examples:

In this first example, Sara cut each of her large half-hexagons into (3) equilateral triangles* to create a star effect for her winter wonderland block.

*in a standard size block, these are 2" equilateral triangles if you are looking to just use/print/buy triangles for this look.

In this second block, Sara replaced the center jewels with seven 1" hexagons in a 'grandmother's flower garden pattern. She also chose to take on the challenge of using only one fabric for this block. If you wanted to take this a step further, you could make the center hexagon out of six little 1" equilateral triangles!

Laura decided to cut her jewel shapes in half so she ended up with a half hexagon and a equilateral triangle.

(don't call the quilting police, but she does use her rotary cutter to cut paper pieces!) Sara has a secondary rotary cutter designated ONLY for paper!

It is fun to see how you can play with the two half hexagons making an hour glass shape with this cut.

These cuts all make for a little more sewing, but the effect can be so worth it. Let your imagination go and try something NEW for the New Year!

When you have made your cuts and assembled your blocks please post them up on Instagram or Facebook! Tag us and use the sew-along hashtags to help us find and share your beautiful work!

The Instagram and Facebook algorithms sometimes do strange things and we might miss your block - if we haven't commented or shared, please send us a message! We don't want to miss seeing anyone's work!

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all - or if this prompt doesn't speak to you, make a block you love and share it up. No rules, just fun! Happy Sewing|!
